This position promotes and supports the learning experience of Marian University students by, An Academic Advisor advises and coaches students concerning their academic plans and progress, academic schedule, choice of major, and other academic activities and career goals, to assist the student in making decisions concerning personal educational goals leading to retention and graduation.
Essential Functions:
- Academic Advising (65%)
- Advise students individually and/or with groups regarding academic core and/or departmental requirements, appropriate class selection, academic policies and procedures, and campus resources.
- Advise special populations within scope of responsibility such as new and transfer students, undeclared majors, under-represented populations, assisting in academic programs and focusing on academic direction, procedures, policies, and available resources.
- Evaluates and interprets course sequencing and student needs to provide individualized service and planning for student progression.
- Evaluate and respond to inquiries regarding credit transfer, waivers, challenge examinations, CLEP exams, course validation and other concerns
- Facilitate semesterly degree audits for designated advisees.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records (advising and student evaluation records).
- Proactively engages students as needed.
- Coordinate EXCEL program (one-year support program, that is three-fold: Summer Bridge-transition to the University, academic workshop attendance, and regular individual meetings tailored to meet the needs of the students).
- Retention (10%)
- Responsible for gathering and maintaining admission, progression, and attrition data. Report concerned students to appropriate resources (Counseling, Marian Cares, Retention committee).
- Provide academic guidance when students are questioning their academic choices, abilities, fit, or belonging in college.
- Supporting students in need by designing and implementing outreach for students who are academically vulnerable.
- Provide interventions for students who are on academic notice, probation, or suspension by understanding and identifying issues that may be affecting their academic achievement.
- Collaboration with Faculty and Staff (15%)
- Evaluate policies and procedures in cooperation with designated academic departments.
- Analyze course progressions and develop recommended course offerings to meet student needs and be efficient with University resources.
- Implements student success events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
- Meet regularly with other offices across campus to discuss and improve processes and policies. Ensure efficiencies within and between departments to meet student needs.
- Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
- Attend all new student Registration Events, Admission Events, and Orientation dates, guiding students as needed.
- Confidentiality and Record Keeping (5%)
- Maintains complete up-to-data accurate advising files on each of the students in a secure place.
- Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records/processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
Other Responsibility:
- Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
- Maintains a positive work environment by cooperating in a professional manner with the
- University community.
- Participates in other college committees and activities, as needed.
- Represents program on advisement committee or related support committees as requested.
Education, Experience, and Skills Required:
- Holds a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in related field.
- Has a minimum of two to four years of full time work experience in a professional capacity.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships and team development.
- Organizational skills, interpersonal communication skills and public speaking experience.
- Willingness to support the Mission and Core Values of the College.
- Strong organizational, planning, written, listening and oral communication, interpersonal, computer and time management skills.
Preferred Education, Education, Experience and Skills:
- Master’s degree in related field.
- Work in a college setting.
